Chaucer College was founded in 1992 by Mr Hiroshi Kawashima. It is an independent College of Higher Education for Japanese students from Shumei University, located on the main campus of the University of Kent, close to the beautiful and historic city of Canterbury. The College forms part of the Chaucer group of Colleges, the UK arm of the Shumei Foundation, as does its sister college, Kingsgate, located near Broadstairs.

It is a residential college with accommodation in individual rooms for about 200 students.

The students are mainly in the first year of their Shumei University course and come to Chaucer College for the first five months of this course. A number of these students then return for a five-month follow-up course in their second year of study.

All students have access to study facilities and sports and leisure facilities at Chaucer College and also at the University of Kent.
